Mexico: 2018 Presidential Election

The purpose of this entry is to give a better understanding of the political parties that exist in Mexico and the current candidates. This year's presidential election is controversial because the people are tired of the unjust and corrupt government that is currently in office.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is part of the political party MORENA. Obrador has lost two presidential elections in the past. Obrador has also held several governmental positions such as Head of Government of the Federal District in 2000. The first one in 2006 and the second one in 2012. Obrador promises that if he wins he will focus on NAFTA and review oil contracts in order to improve the economy.

Jose Antonio Meade Kuribrena is part of the political party PRI. Meade has held several position in the government. For example he has held five ministerial jobs, social development, some in energy and finance. He has a PhD from Yale in Economics.

Ricardo Anaya Cortes is part of the political party PAN. Anaya is one of the youngest candidates. He came into spotlight when he was President of the National Party Act (PAN) in 2015. Before that he held other positions such as the Legislature for Queretaro. His proposals are to create a minimum income for everyone and to investigate the current government that has been accused of corruption.

Jaime Rodriguez Calderon is an independent. Calderon also known as “El Bronco” strongly believes that the transformation that Mexico needs must begin with the young people. He was a member of the PRI for more than 33 years, but then resigned. Calderon is also the first independent Governors of Nuevo Leon.

There have been several political parties in Mexico through out the last century, but here are some of the most popular ones.

Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) --- Institutional Revolutionary Party
The political party PRI is known to many as the dominant party. It was established in 1929 and was founded by President Plutarco Elias Calles. It was Mexico’s only political party until Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) was established. PRI is known to be corrupt by many of the people. Most of the state legislatures and local government are PRI representatives.

Partido De Accion Nacional (PAN) --- National Action Party
The political party PAN was established by Manuel Gomez Moran in 1939. It is known as the leftist party and emerged due to actions taken by the government that involved nationalization and land confiscation. It is known to want less government involvement, especially in the economy.

Movimiento De Regeneración Nacional (MORENA) --- National Regeneration Movement
The National Regeneration Movement was founded by Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in 2014. This political party focuses on the people of Mexico to stand against the corrupt and authoritarian government. It also wants to be involved in market competition. It is predicted that this party will hold several seats in the government, although currently it only holds 8 percent.

In conclusion, this years presidential is very important because the people want to get rid of the corrupt government. The people want someone that will make an actual change. A candidate who will focus on the lower class and that will better the economy. That being said Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador won the 2018 presidential election. He has promised the people of Mexico that he will fight for equality, end corruption, and increase social programs.
